From 1-4PM the same day, Deborah will give a workshop in layering, color theory with pastels, various supports for pastels and the best pastels to use for what purpose. You will work from your own photos or a still life set up by Deborah. After a brief lecture, assistance in beginning your composition and problem solving early on in the work will be done individually as needed. The last 45 minutes of the workshop will be used for a brief positive critique and suggestions.

Local people may view Deborah’s work at the Art MoB Studio’s & Gallery in Hendersonville, where she has a working studio space.

Deborah Broad studied fine art at the NY Phoenix School of Design and the Art League School in Alexandria. Deborah took a pastel class at the Art League from well-known pastel artist Kornelia Sprigg and became hooked on the medium immediately. “I love the flexibility, the forgiveness and the ability to break all the rules with pastel.” says Deborah.

Ms. Broad is represented in corporate and private collections worldwide including The National Institute of Health in Washington, DC. She is also the recipient of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Award from the Pastel Society of America and her contributions have been recognized by the Artist Magazine.

Deborah is a choreographer of visual elements relying on spontaneity and impulses in the orchestration of her characters. Working with high-contrast color arrangements of small round objects or conversant portly jugs, positioned as if interacting reveals her unquestionable interest and mastery of composition and color.

“I work in several mediums, but have found not any other medium that satisfies my need to push the limits of the subject matter I am painting. Being able to mix complimentary colors and achieve a magical blend of both colors allows me to also push the boundaries of pastel and my own ideas of color. I thrive on the challenge of creating colors that exist nowhere else and with no other medium. Subject matter is important to me as well as the composition. Making a simple still life come alive with contrast and color is my clear objective.
