The Poetic Landscape

Pastel Presentation/Workshop

with Barbara Jaenicke, PSA, IAPS-MC

May 9, 2015

Once you learn the mechanics of painting the landscape, it’s time to learn how to add the magic…the poetry. We’ll examine the difference between paintings that merely contain elements of the landscape, and those that strike an emotion… and how to gain the skills necessary to accomplish this. We’ll cover some methods and techniques that will help you edit unnecessary details that detract from the emotion you want to convey.

Supply List

Pastels – Feel free to use your favorites if you already have a good range of values. I highly recommend organizing your pastels by value. If you plan to stock up a bit before the workshop, here are some of my favorites:

  • Unison
  • Terry Ludwig
  • Schmincke
  • Sennelier (I like the newer half sticks better than the older Sennelier pastels I tried years ago)
  • Hard pastels – NuPastels or Rembrandts – Have at least one fairly dark NuPastel (I use 244 blue violet), plus a small basic selection of Nupastels or Rembrandts (especially warm, vibrant mid values…pinks, oranges, yellows) for underpainting.
  • One or two dark pastel pencils (any brand is fine)

Surface – Mounted Uart paper (mounted to foamboard). One 11×14 panel. I don’t recommend using the premounted Uart paper…the texture is very different and difficult to work with.

To mount the Uart paper, I recommend either of these methods:

1) Easiest (but fine for use in this workshop) – Use a spray adhesive – Scotch “photo safe” Photo Mount works well and is easy to use, but make sure corners are pressed down well, or

2) More difficult but the most permanent – Use a product called Grafix DoubleTack Acid-Free Mounting Film (available at Jerry’s Artarama or Dick Blick) It’s like a large sheet of double stick tape (a little tricky to use so give yourself plenty of time, and extra materials for “mess ups,” to mount it this way).

Other supplies:

  • Small pad of tracing paper
  • Artists tape
  • A couple of pencils (any type) for thumbnails
  • Rubbing alcohol for underpainting
  • Small jar for alcohol
  • Brush for underpainting – I use a #8 old/worn bristle brush, but many different types can be used.
  • Cotton rag
  • Backing board (such as foamboard)
  • Hand wipes
  • Paper towels
  • Latex gloves or other hand protection if desired

Reference Photos:

Bring a few options of your own landscape photos. You may work from printed photos or from digital images on your laptop or iPad. Even if you plan to work from digital images, please also print out paper copies at a thumbnail size (roughly 3×4 or so), and if you’re not working from digital images, also print larger copies. I typically work from thumbnail-sized photos printed out on regular printer paper (for composition purposes) along with digital images displayed on my iPad screen.

Please do not plan to work directly from photos on your phone.
