Ron Laboray…Curating and Artistic Public Engagement

ron laboray in studioRon Laboray will discuss aspects of jurying public exhibitions.  Attendees are encouraged to ask questions about curating, submitting to exhibitions and how to approach a studio practice and strengthen an artistic statement.

Ron was the Judge of the APS 2015 Juried Member Exhibition at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts.

The work of Ron Laboray has been exhibited in museums, special project spaces, and galleries in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Memphis, St. Louis, Taiwan, and Japan. Laboray’s art merges abstract painting and drawing with a pseudoscientific method to create a growing visual archive of popular culture. In his work, the visual language of abstraction supports a color-coded archive of data, based on mass culture elements like television, movies, comic books, fast food logos and junk mail advertising. Ron currently resides in Asheville North Carolina and holds the rank of Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Western Carolina University.

There is no fee to attend the morning event. [Open to the public]

About Deborah…

“I grew up outside of Boston, and was happily influenced by the Realism of Ives Gammel’s Boston School tradition and the wonderful area museums, studying at DeCordova Museum School between HS and college. During that time I was able to travel to Europe as an art student.

20150904_092016“I received a BFA in painting from the University of New Hampshire. A pivotal
experience was as an Artist in Residence at a large geriatric mental health facility,

“Years later I met pastels through classes and workshops with Jill Pottle, Aline Ordman and Margaret Dyer. For me pastel is the perfect dance between painting and drawing. And the “music” has captured me.”

Deborah takes joy in teaching children and adults to see and discover the artist within, teaching in a variety of settings since 1995.
