Our February 12, 2011 APS Meeting:

The Jurying Process with Fleta Monaghan

Fleta Monaghan, M.A.Ed., Juror for APS 2011 Member Show presenting on 'The Jurying Process'

The speaker for our February 12, 2011 Appalachian Pastel Society meeting will be Fleta Monaghan, M.Ed., founder and director of River’s Edge Studio and 310 ART Gallery, located at Riverview Station in the River District of Asheville. Fleta’s website is fletamonaghan.com.

Fleta will be serving as our juror for the 2011 Juried Member Exhibition in October, and at our January meeting, will demonstrate what a juror looks for in entries submitted. Fleta will view slides submitted to a previous APS Exhibition and share her reactions and judgments with the group impromptu – as she views them.

Once Fleta has reviewed and decided the paintings to be included in ‘her show,’ we will provide the comments, jurying decisions and award placements made by the other juror for comparison with Fleta’s decisions. A discussion will take place from that point regarding individual differences among jurors as well as common threads.

After receiving her BFA from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Magna Cum Laude, with Distinction in Art and as a University Scholar, Distinction as a Research Scholar, Fleta completed her Master of Arts Education degree (M.A.Ed) at Western Carolina University, focusing on the Teaching of Art. During this time, she even attended a pastel workshop with Alan Flattman on full scholarship!

A veteran of numerous solo and group exhibitions, in 2006 Fleta founded River’s Edge Studio where she focuses on art instruction for adults and professional development coaching for artists. Her 310 Art Gallery offers a Contemporary Gallery of original art, while hosting opportunities for artists to teach and exhibit.

We hope you can join us from 10:00 am to Noon on February 12th, 2011 at the WNC Agriculture Center, Youth Building (Click here for directions to the WNC Ag Center)
